You Can’t Afford Not to Save

Often, people will say that they just don’t have enough money to build a savings account. Then something big happens and they’re stuck with nothing extra. Maybe someone gets sick, or the car breaks down . . . we all have dozens of things that have the potential to suck the money out of our wallets in no time.

I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met that claim they are poor and then proceed to fly out to visit relatives in another country or buy name brand clothing new for their kids. That’s not poor.

Poor is digging change out of the sofa cushions to see if you can afford some eggs to make pancakes for dinner for your kids, because it’s the most filling meal you can manage right now. Poor is having oatmeal every morning, not Fruit Loops that cost four times as much and feed you for 2 days instead of four.

Anyway. My point here is not exactly what the definition of poor is, but to point out the fact that if you can afford nice clothes and expensive food, you can afford to save some money in the bank. It might mean not getting jeans for another month, or switching to oatmeal one day a week, but you CAN find ways to put that money in the bank and you should.

Without savings to back you up in an emergency, you could lose everything. So doesn’t it make sense to do without a little now, while things are going well and avoid problems later?
