Working with Company
I haven’t seen most of my family in nearly a decade now, but one of my sisters wrote me the other day and said she was coming down for a week. She arrived last week and since I had about 3 days to prepare, I was still up to my eyeballs in work.
Now, when you have company, it’s REALLY hard to get anything done. That is multiplied by 10 when the person is your sister that you haven’t seen in 3.5 years. I have been struggling a bit, but I know a few things I would do differently next time!
Keep some work hours. You can’t dedicate all day to work, but you do need to dedicate some time. This might be early in the morning before your guest wakes up, or it might be later in the evening, once they have retired. My sister also spent time hanging out with my kids for a bit while I was working.
Work ahead! This wasn’t possible this time around, but if you know ahead of time that someone is coming, you can certainly get ahead so you have less stress while they are around.
Have activities ready. My sister loves movies, but rarely watches them since she works so much. So, I made popcorn, had her choose from a selection of our favorites and pulled out my husband’s laptop. We watched the movie and I got some work done. You can also send guests on tours by themselves, if you are up to your ears in work.
Postpone some work. Anything that doesn’t have to be done right now can be put off for a bit. You can catch up later!
