Work at Home vs. Work from Home
Do you work from home or at home? It doesn‘t sound like much of a difference, but there is a very big one! Everyone will have their own definition, but for the purposes of this post, here is what I am defining these two phrases as:
Work at Home: You have your own business or are a freelancer. You control your own hours, pay, etc.
Work from Home: You work for a company out of your home. You might have some flexibility in hours, but you will be required to get a certain amount of work done.
Which one you are depends greatly on your personality. Some women find it easier to have a boss to report to, someone who does the quality control and a guaranteed paycheck. Others prefer the uncertain pay and freedom of running their own business. Personally, I am a work at home mom, but I see nothing wrong with those who enjoy getting that deposit in their bank accounts each month, without fail!
Running your own business, whether as a writer or making candles, is challenging. Doing it at home, with kids underfoot is even more daunting, but hundreds of moms are making it work every day. The advantage of working at home is that you can choose to grow your business as slowly as you want. If your kids are still very small, you might not want to become a multi-million dollar company just yet. A small workshop in your garage might be enough right now, but once the kids head off to school, you can start expanding.
Working for a company, on the other hand, is seldom as flexible as running your own business. In fact, it can be a lot like working in an office, with a set number of hours or work that you need to do. You can negotiate the terms ahead of time, but usually you will be expected to do a certain amount on a daily basis. This can be pretty stressful if you have kids around. Some days it just might not be possible to meet your deadlines.
However, if you have a boss and a real paycheck, you are also in a far more stable position than most women who run their own businesses out of their homes. In fact, you will be able to easily budget your income since you know exactly how much is coming to you. On top of this, working for a company means that you don‘t have to go scrambling around to find clients, you will be told what to do.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods of home working, but only you can decide which one works for you. It might be worth sitting down and writing out the pros and cons of each for your particular situation if you can‘t make up your mind. Please feel free to let me know what you prefer in the comments section.
