Why Your Work at Home Schedule Doesn’t Work

Scheduling your day makes all the difference in how productive you are, but chances are, if you’re a work at home mom, you are never actually ON schedule. You plan to write articles for promotion between 8-9 in the morning, but your toddler has other plans and hangs off you, crying, until you give up and play with him. You schedule work time during soccer practice . . . only to find that it’s canceled today. The list of things that can go wrong is neverending.

So, can having a schedule really work?

The truth is that it can, but you need to be prepared, as well. The best way to make sure you get things done is to add extra time to every task. If writing that promotional article takes you 30 minutes, schedule 45-60. If you plan to have a meeting that will take an hour, add an extra half hour in case it goes over.

This means you’ll have less time to do things during the day, but you won’t be as frustrated when something happens to throw you off your schedule, since you have extra time worked in. We moms tend to be overly optimistic as to how much we can do in a day, this will help you be more realistic.

Another benefit of this type of planning is that if nothing goes badly and you end up finishing all your tasks early, you can do more. Have a list on hand of things that aren’t necessarily time sensitive and add those to your day when you finish up early. Or start in on the following day’s work.

Do you use a schedule or fly by the seat of your pants?

  1. You are absolutely right! A good book i would recommend for time management would be Getting Things Done by David Allen. It’s a proven time management system that works for anyone. Whether you are a corporate executive, or a soccer mom, the GTD (getting things done) system works. I have found great success with it, and I know many people have as well.

What I really liked about this post, is the message of keeping a list and a schedule. Those are two absolutely essential tools to have when trying to be organized, and on schedule.

  2. owning a couple of blogs and websites and monetizing them with adsense or adbrite is a good way to Work at home. you can also answer paid surveys but most of them are scam sites.
