What’s Your Unique Selling Point?

One of the things that many people don’t think about enough when starting up their own business is just what is going to set them apart from everyone else. Sure, you might have a great idea for a business and you might be ready to set up the perfect shop with the cutest baby dresses, but guess what? You are not the only person making cute baby dresses! Why would someone choose you over the woman down the street who has been selling cute designs for ten years?

It`s not fun to think about. I admit it. I hated trying to come up with a reason why people would come check out At Home Mom and stick around. In fact, it`s the reason this blog has changed over the past couple of months! I actually couldn`t think of ANY reason why moms would read what I had to say, as opposed to all the other mom blogs out there. It`s a painful realization to come to.

While it might not be pleasant to think about, you still need to do it. Without a unique selling point, your business will end up like one of those surburbs where every house looks exactly the same . . . there`s nothing to tell them apart except the street numbers! Don`t be a boring replica of what is already out there . . . if you look at someone`s business and think, “I could do that”, go ahead, do it. But do it in a manner uniquely your own and that is what will make sure you have clients.

How to Choose a Unique Selling Point

Truthfully, I`m not an expert in this area, but I do have a few pointers. Any of my readers who are more experienced, feel free to chime in!

Look at the Competition – What are they doing that you could do better? What areas of their business do you dislike? What makes your business stand out from theirs?

Inject Your Personality – Even if you are in a crowd of 50 people who have similar interests, you will always be drawn to some more than others because of the way they are . . . their personality. Same thing with your business, if you inject your personality into the business, you`ll find that clients will be drawn to your business.

Offer Something Extra – Maybe you have a unique insight on your industry that you could share, maybe you could offer handmade hats with your little dresses or custom baby headbands. Maybe you could donate 10% of your profits to a children’s charity. Anything extra will help your business stand out.

Target a Specific Market -  There are a few businesses that make it by being everything to everyone (think Wal-Mart), but the truth is that most of us make it by targeting a very specific target market. Don`t make dresses for everyone. Make dresses for those who like crochet designs for 0-3 years, for example. Just how specific your market is will depend on you, but make sure you know just who is going to buy your products. If you`re offering a product for rock fans, for example, then you will be chosen by that market over the person selling  a similar product aimed at jazz fans.

What is your Unique Selling Point? Do you have any tips on how to choose one for those moms who are reading this and need some help?
