Use Routine to Stay on Track

What are your mornings like? Are they a rush to get kids dressed, forgetting things, searching for shoes and socks, yelling and skipping breakfast? Or, if you have younger kids, do you find that they tend to run around in Pjs most of the day? Up until a couple of weeks ago, we had a very similar problem here. Until I decided it was time for a routine.

Most of us have a bedtime routine with our kids and you`re probably familiar with how well children respond to this . . . so why not use it in the morning, too? A simple chore chart can help everyone stay on top of things.

The trick here is to get your kids into the routine early on . . . then they`ll stick to it on their own. Here are a few tips for developing a morning routine.

  • Keep it simple. My toddlers have only five items on their morning chart and five on the night one. I stuck with simple things like combing hair, getting dressed and washing up, etc.
  • Reward them. Kids LOVE stuff like stickers and balloons, so use these for added incentive. My boys can`t have shoes to go outside until they`ve finished their charts, which is a huge motivation for them.
  • Do it yourself. What better way to get your kids to work with your chore charts than have one to do yourself?

Routine can be, well, boring, but at the same time, kids thrive on it. So, for more ordered mornings, stop trying to tell them what to do and changing it every few minutes and just teach them to do everything in order.

What are your experiences with chore charts? How do you incorporate routine into your day?
