Tune Out the Noise
Ever noticed how much noisier a home office is than a regular office cubical? Babies fussing, kids fighting, phone ringing and electronic toys beeping, screeching and wailing . . . it takes a dedicated mom to actually brave these conditions and get some real work done!
Do you have some tricks that you use to help tune out the noises that are just part of being at home with your little ones? Work at home moms of school aged children have a bit of respite during school hours, but those of us with children still at home have a non-stop cacophony going on all day. Here are a few ideas to help you block out or avoid the non-essential chaos that assaults your ears on a daily basis.
- Get some headphones and listen to music. Go for something that will provide background noise, but not distract you from your work
- “Lose” the batteries to all electronic toys. I find this is easier than telling them they canĀ“t use them during work hours!
- Have some quiet toys that the kids can only use when you are busy at the computer or doing something else that requires more concentration than they are allowing you. Magnetic fridge toys such as Magnetic ABC Blocks
or Magnetic Fridge Gears
are good toys to keep your kids busy in the kitchen while you work.
- Send the kids outside and work where you can see them, but not get distracted by the noise. Alternatively, take your laptop outside and leave the kids in the house . . . at your own risk.

Good one…It constantly amazes me how I get my work done in midst of all my son’s trains and trucks and my daughter’s constant questions and suggestions.
