Take Some Time This Week

Here in Guatemala, Easter is celebrated for an entire week, Semana Santa. There are beautiful carpets made of sawdust and fruit that people lay out in the streets and processions every day. Street vendors offer food on every corner and thousands of people travel to Antigua to watch the amazing events. School is out for nearly two weeks and everyone turns out to enjoy the fun with their friends and family.

While Easter might not be such a big deal back in Canada and the US, that doesn`t mean you can`t enjoy spending a little extra time with your family this week. Here are a few ideas to get you going:

- If you are religious, talk about the origins of Easter with your kids and look up “Semana Santa” on YouTube, you`ll find plenty of fun videos.

- Learn more about Easter in other countries and look at ways you can try recipes or activities from other cultures with your kids.

- Just hang out with your family, no computer allowed. Watch a favorite movie, take advantage of the spring and get outside or bake some cookies together.

- Take some time to go out and go flower hunting. Pick some branches with buds on them and then take them home and put them in water to watch the leaves sprout.

- Make some Easter posters with designs drawn on cardboard and have your kids fill them in with rice and beans. You can color the rice by tossing a small amount with some drops of food coloring and then letting it dry overnight.

- Get crazy with the eggs this year. Try making some egg dioramas or try your hand at pysanky eggs. Here are even more ideas for egg crafts.

- A few more fun crafts that you can whip up with your kids and enjoy spending time with them this Easter include this tissue paper chick (perfect for little kids), an egg stitched card which would make a neat gift, crocheted Easter critters and flowers,or dye some eggs.

Happy Easter and don`t forget to take some time out to spend with your family this week!
