Take Some Time for Yourself

This year, one of my resolutions or goals, is to start doing something for myself each day. Something non-work related, like painting or reading a book. As work at home moms, we often end up too busy to just sit down and do something enjoyable. You might be thinking, “But I have WAY too much to do! I can´t stop to read a book!”

Trust me on this. You will be more efficient and able to work harder and faster if you rest from time to time than if you ignore your own needs and just work from dawn till dusk. We all need to recharge our batteries from time to time and the best way to prevent burnout is to do that on a regular basis.

Think of it this way . . . would you force your kids to study or do chores every waking moment? Of course not. You know it´s good for kids to have some play time, to veg out once in a while in front of a decent video or take a nap. You would never expect your children to work all day long without a break. And you shouldn´t expect it of yourself, either. Obviously, you have more responsibilities than your kids, but that doesn´t mean it will kill you to take ten or fifteen minutes to sit down with your coffee and relax.

Signs You Need Some Me Time

  • You´re jealous of your husband when he comes home from work and crashes on the couch, watching sitcoms.
  • You find yourself checking your email and doing little chores to distract you from work.
  • You snap at your children for interrupting you . . . even if you are only waiting for a file to load.
  • You dawdle over lunch, reluctant to get back to work or household chores.
  • Your bedtime is getting earlier and earlier, you find that you are tired for no particular reason.

How to Recharge Your Batteries

  • Read a novel or woman´s magazine. Nothing serious, just good fun.
  • Take a bubble bath. Lock the door behind you. Play some music and relax.
  • Sit outside and write in your journal with the sun over your shoulder (if you live in a cold climate, a window might be better. ;)
  • Take a walk.
  • Watch a sappy romantic flick or a comedy.
  • Go out for coffee with a friend.
  • Work on a hobby, sewing, painting, etc.

Taking even fifteen minutes each day to do something for yourself will help you return to work more invigorated and deal with the daily issues of life and family in a calmer manner since you´ve had a chance to chill out.
