Start a Candy Wrapper Business
Have you ever seen those ads in the backs of women’s magazine for personalized candy bars? You can start up your own business without too much trouble, offering personalized chocolate bar wrappers.
These personalized, wrapped chocolates are usually used as favors for bridal showers, weddings, birth announcements or as gifts at a corporate function. There is a lot of demand for this type of personalized item and let’s face it, a chocolate bar is going to make a bigger impression than a pen! They are perfect for using at trade shows and the like and could even be used to replace business cards.
If you have a high quality printer, you can make your own wrappers at home. You will need a wholesale source of chocolate bars, good quality paper and ink and a bit of an eye for design. Previous experience in Photoshop would be a big asset in starting this business.
Basically, what you would do is collect personal messages from people, a photo if they want it, and do up a simple design on your computer. After a short time, you would have some basic templates, so really, it just consists of plugging in the message, adding the photo, a bit of retouching if necessary and you are good to go.
To start off with, a good home printer might be fine, but if you will be getting into any kind of volume, you will need to find a good professional printer near you. They will use different methods and file formats, so make sure you understand everything before sending off a file or you could end up with some oddly colored or off-kilter candy wrappers.
Promotion is relatively simple. You can go with an ad in the local newspaper, flyers and word of mouth, but once you have established your company in your hometown, it’s time to expand. A website would be an excellent addition to your business.
