Preparing for Problems

Yesterday, my internet was out and didn´t come back until 8 am this morning. While I sat around fretting about missed emails and article deadlines, not to mention my blogs, I realized that this would have been a lot less stressful if I had just taken the time to prepare for such a problem.

For example, if you have a blog on a Wordpress platform, you´ll know that it is possible to write several posts ahead and set them to publish automatically. I didn´t do that. It is something that would be very simple to set up, to get ahead two or three posts and then add a new one each day. If the power goes out (we´re getting a few hurricane tails down here) or the internet, then it isn´t such a big deal.

All this got me to thinking about our businesses. Is your business set up so that you can survive a hiccup in production? If not, this might be a good time to sit down and take a look at where you can change things so that an unexpected event won´t crash your business, especially if you are right at the beginning when every second counts.

My business is freelance writing. I´m a bit behind today because I missed an entire day of work, since my latest assignment is on something I don´t personally know much about. My new strategy is to copy and paste the information I need for articles and save it on my computer. That way I can work, even when there is not internet access. The worst that can happen is I have to save it to a memory stick and head to the internet cafe.

So, how could you make your business more life-proof? Share in the comments!
