Organizing a “Mobile” Home Office

Not every work at home mom can afford to have a proper desk, let alone an entire room as an office. If you can, all the better, but for the purposes of this post, we`re looking at those fun “mobile” offices that many wahms deal with . . . hauling things to and from the kitchen table.

Laptop Case:

Chances are, your laptop is your main office accessory. Investing in a decent case for it will save you a lot of time in the long run. You can keep all sorts of useful things in those little pockets. Here are a handful of items to keep on hand, tucked into your laptop case.

  • A couple of pens that work.
  • A small notepad.
  • Spare blank cds, if you have a burner.
  • Your memory.
  • Extra batteries, for your computer, as well as AA batteries for a camera or anything else that might need it.
  • Spare extension cord.
  • Wet wipes in a Ziploc bag (to clean spills instantly).

Plastic Laundry Basket:

Even just a small one works well, or you can invest in a plastic box that has a top, if your kids tend to get into everything still. Keep this office box in a closet or out of sight, but include all your useful items in it. When you need to look through your paperwork, etc. just haul the entire thing to the kitchen table and you have it all in one place. Now, within the laundry basket, you`ll need a few things:

  • Plastic envelopes for keeping important papers (be sure to label them!)
  • Smaller boxes or bags to hold items like thumbtacks, paper clips and staples.
  • CD case for all your software discs.
  • Regular office supplies, such as pens, pencils, stapler, scissors, post-it notes, etc.

Having one place for everything related to your business can be a great way to ensure that you aren`t hunting all over the house for something when you need it. By using color-coded plastic envelopes or folders, you`ll eliminate the stress of searching for an invoice or bill right when you need it . . . everything will be in one place.
