Motivational Monday: Setting Public Goals

How often have you made a New Year´s resolution that ended up being left by the wayside? It happens more often than we like to admit, but pretty much everyone skips out on those grandiose plans made on the cusp of the new year. What about goals you make during the year?

Often, it can help to publicly state your goals, on your blog, on someone else´s blog, or anywhere that you have more than one person paying attention. While the simple embarrassment of not fulfilling goals that you put out there might be enough motivation, you might also want to set up a punishment for not reaching your goal . . . and a reward if you do.

If you have a blog, personal or otherwise, you can post your goals there. Or, you can post them in the comments on this article. Here are a few guidelines for setting achievable public goals.

  • Less is more. Choose two or three goals at a time. A huge list is overwhelming, it can be difficult to get everything  done. Instead, pick a handful of goals and break them into mini-goals or steps to achieve.
  • State your goal in one sentence. If you need a paragraph, you probably should split it into more than one goal.
  • Set a date. Don´t have your goals just hanging out there, it´s too easy to forget them. Pick a time that you can reasonably expect to finish things and make that your deadline.

So, please feel free to post your goals on your own blog or in the comments here. I would love to read them. And, since it wouldn´t be fair to ask you to publicly state your goals without sharing mine . . . here they are. Three things to achieve before Jan. 1.

My Goals

1. Have an average of 500 visitors per day to this blog.

2. Write an ebook.

3. Finish a snowflake afghan that I´m working on.

  1. Tamara and I were brave and posted our goals from our business plan on the Freelance Parent blog a few weeks ago. It was awesome when we got together this week and discovered that we are *this* close to meeting our three-month goals and are gearing up to roll on into our six-month goals.

  2. That´s great, Lorna! Congrats! Hopefully I will be able to write the same around Christmas. :D
