Motivational Monday: Interview with Donna Toomey

Today`s Motivational Monday is a bit late, thanks to some Terrible Two issues I`ve been dealing with, but it turned out for the better since I just received this interview back from Donna Toomey at Cozy Baby Quilts. She`s a busy work at home mom who runs a very neat business ( I highly suggest checking out her sweet baby blankets) online.

1. What is your business?
I make and sell handmade baby quilts and security blankets.

2. How did you get started?
On the World Wide Web! But when I was in college the internet wasn’t what it is today, so I knew that I had a lot of learning to do. I taught myself web design using html & CSS and built my web site from scratch. I am presently re-designing/updating my web site and it should be ready to go live within the next few weeks! {very proud and excited about it - so keep a lookout for it.}
3. What mistakes did you make when you were starting out? What did you learn from them?
#1: Falling for a online SEO scam. ALWAYS keep your guard up; do your homework and research anyone trying to sell you a service, etc. Unfortunately, there are far too many frauds out there. I have learned… “Knowledge is Power”
#2: Be careful of a merchant wanting to purchase large quantities! Again, do your homework and research FIRST! Luckily, I had a bad feeling and contacted the proper authorities. They advised me that I had done the right thing. Long story short, I’ve learned to ALWAYS handle online transactions through a secure gateway; this ensures that your customer is legitimate and protects youthe seller from fraudulent transactions!

4. How long have you been working from home? (was this your first business or have you had others where you worked from home?)

Since May 2003 - 5 years now, and this is my first business.

5. What are your tricks for balancing work, kids and household chores?
I feel that is it all a state of mind or how you approach balance. Don’t stress and you’ll be calm enough to get it all done. Delegate tasks and always have a sense of humor!

6. How many children do you have? How old are they?
We have one 10 year old little boy.

7. When do you usually work?
I try to devote 6 hours a day for my business; while my son is at school. If I have a full order board; I will put in 1 or 2 more hours at night.
8. What is the best part of being a mompreneur? And the worst?
The BEST = Being able to raise our son ourselves.
The worst = Not having enough energy left to get and stay physically fit!

9. What are your plans for the future of your business?
I have a few but the most important plan is to expand my online marketing campaign

10. What advice would you give new work at home moms?
Once, you have decided to take on the challenge of working at home; stay confident and ALWAYS get enough sleep, you will need both to handle all the ups and downs. Joining a work-at-home network has been and still is a huge support for me; I highly recommend it.

That`s some great advice, moms! Sleep is very important. If you want to get a closer look at Donna`s adorable quilts, check out her website.
