It Pays to Be Ignorant

Before you think I`m condoning not educating yourself, I just want to make myself clear . . . it pays to be ignorant about things you don`t need to know.

You Don`t Need to Know Everything

As an entrepreneur, it`s tempting to try and do everything on your own, especially as you start out and there isn`t a lot of money. And while this may be practical if you are on a non-existant budget, there are times when you will find that the task is too big to really be worth your time.

It`s certainly possible to learn everything on your own, but it`s going to take you a lot longer to reach your goals. In the case where there`s no money, this isn`t necessarily a bad thing. Many work at home moms sacrifice their time to save money when their business is just getting off the ground, but once you`re bringing in some cash, it is definitely time to start outsourcing.

The REAL Cost of Learning

Let`s say you are charging $50 an hour for your time. You need a website and yes, you could learn to code and build it yourself. You could even figure out how to design a pretty decent website. But it`s not going to take you a couple of days. In fact, you`re looking at possibly weeks of fiddling and studying . . . let`s give a conservative guess of about 25 hours.

Now, how much is that time worth? 25 hours at $50 ends up being $1,250! It seems rather silly to waste your time learning a new skill like this (unless you plan to make web design your business) when you could pay a fraction of that to have your website designed by a professional. It will end up being cheaper and better designed..

While we`d all like to think we can be experts at everything, the truth is you can usually only be an expert at a handful of things and it pays to focus on the things you are really good at. Leave out the knowledge that you don`t actually need. Let someone else do it and focus that brain power on something else more productive!

  1. It’s so important to know when to step back and realize that having someone else do the job will not only result in time and cost savings for yourself, but will also help your business in the long run. I think that it’s human nature to want to do it all ourselves, but we have to let go of that pride and realize the times when it’s best to hire an expert.
