Is Your Home Business Idea Worth the Risk?

With the economy sliding downhill, it`s not surprising that more and more moms want to start their own home business. It allows extra income for stay at home moms and lets working moms look at staying home with their kids, saving on daycare fees and the commute.

So, you have a business idea, one that you think is great. How do you know if it`s actually worth investing in? Here are a few checkpoints to go through before you start that business up.

  • Is there a market for it? Don`t just guess, actually get out there and ask people. You might want to look into doing some market research on forums that are related to your topic.
  • How much will it cost to get started? If you haven`t written up a business plan and budget, do that now. It`s an important step that will really get you thinking about all the different aspects of running a business. You can find business plan templates here.
  • What do your friends and family think? While this isn`t a “professional” poll, it can really help to get feedback from people you know. Don`t accept a “I don`t like that idea”, make sure they give you specific reasons they think it won`t work, like “There`s too much competition” and then go do more research to find out if that`s true.
  • Are you prepared to put in the time? Starting up a home business is not an easy task. Most people don`t manage it by working a couple of hours a day, so are you prepared to throw yourself all in and really work at it? This could mean spending less time with your family and staying up late into the night to make sure your business gets off to a great start.
  • Can you do this where you live? There are two sides to this. Location is very important in many businesses, so if you are starting, say, a bakery, make sure you have the right location where you live. Home businesses that involve online sales or delivered products are often more effective. The second part is zoning. Can you legally run this type of business out of your home?

There are a lot of things to consider when you are working on a new home business idea, however, these points should give you a pretty good idea as to how well it will work. You may even want to do a test, make a few products and see if people are interested in buying them in your area.

What criteria do you use to test a new home business idea?
