How You Can Multi-Task Working and Time with Kids
As work at home moms we tend to multi-task most of the time anyway, but one area that can really be difficult is spending time with your kids when you need to work. It can be done, though! I don`t recommend doing this 24/7, but when you`re under a time crunch, this can be the ideal way to keep kids happy and get something done.
As I write this, my almost-3 year old is sitting on a chair beside me, drawing construction machines while his 19 month old brother sits in his bouncy chair at my feet, crumpling the discarded sheets of paper. It`s far from the peace and quiet people normally imagine in an office, but I`m still able to work and every few minutes, I`m asked to draw a police car or add some details to a stick person. It`s a minimal interruption, the boys are happy to just be near me and are fine with the occasional moment of attention. I can keep an eye on them and interact with them as needed.
The trick to multi-tasking with kids is to find something that you can work on while being distracted every few minutes. Older kids would be able to go longer without needing input, but toddlers like mine need a LOT of attention.
Settle them with something quiet to do like drawing or a puzzle and let them work right beside you.
You`ll find that switching between helping position a puzzle piece on the table next to you and getting a few paragraphs written or an ad put up on your blog is far easier than trying to keep an eye on kids in another room or having to run into the living room to draw a flower!
