Homeschooling Work at Home Moms: Are You Insane?

You`d be surprised at how many work at home moms homeschool. To the outsider, this sounds like a recipe for insanity, not having those precious school hours to sit down and get something done!

I`m about to join the ranks of homeschooling work at home moms and to tell you the truth, it does feel a bit crazy! The entire balance is going to be thrown out. However, there are some definite advantages, apart from the obvious ones, of course.

You learn to plan. Even if you aren`t a terribly organized person, the fact of the matter is, homeschooling requires some semblence of planning. Which is actually a good thing, since it can leak over into your work life as well. Suddenly, you find that you are not just writing out lesson plans, but also plans for your business.

You learn to schedule. Not all homeschoolers are very scheduled, but even so, you do tend to fall into a routine, starting school at a specific hour, working for x amount of time. And guess what? That is also beneficial to your work. You`ll end up scheduling work and meetings around school hours, which tends to make for a more productive day, work and schoolwise.

You spend more time with your kids. As work at home moms, it`s easy to get caught up in being a workaholic and having school time scheduled each day pretty much forces you to step away from work and focus on your children. Even if you spend time with your kids every day, homeschooling can enhance that.

Being new to the work at home/homeschool scene, I would love to hear what my more experienced readers think. Any tips to share? And if you don`t homeschool, what do you think of it? Could you ever see yourself teaching your kids at home?

You can learn more about homeschooling at Barnabas Way, a blog three other homeschooling parents and I have been working on. Eventually it will evolve into a proper community for homeschoolers, so check in as we grow!

  1. Thanks for a great blog and the link to the homeschool community. I teach my 8th grader, while my other children attend school….my 8th grader has been homeschooling for 2 yrs now and it was her idea! She is a lovely, sweet teen as well. I am lucky to spend everyday with her.

I dont “work” at home, per se….I am a Registered Nurse and work in labor and delivery per diem, so I am able to work my job around my school days. And its a beautiful thing.
