Get Rid of Your Biggest Distraction

What is your biggest distraction in your home business? Or should I say, “who”?

While things like email and Twitter tend to draw us in, those are choices that you actually make to let yourself be distracted. But what about when you are working on the sofa and your husband puts on a movie you`ve been dying to see? Or your toddler starts trying to disconnect your internet . . . again?

Kids and spouses are probably some of the biggest distractions there are. It`s not like you can turn them off or even just ignore them. At least, not if you want to keep living in the same house. So, what are your options here?

Husbands
Men have the uncanny ability to focus entirely on one thing at a time. We women don`t seem to have that talent. We get distracted by things like bombs going off a few feet away when attempting to write an article or finish up a pair of earrings.

The best way to get your husband to help you out in the distraction department is to give him some free time. Most guys love to go out with their buddies to the bar or what have you and if you suggest it, he`ll probably be out the door faster than you can blink. And you`ll have some quiet time.

Another good idea is to simply talk to him. Maybe he doesn`t realize that having his Santana album blaring at top volume is keeping your mind off your latest press release. Even if it seems obvious, make sure you let him know that it`s bothering you and see if you can`t work something out. In my house, my husband wears his headphones to listen to his music and even the television.

Kids
Ah, kids. You gotta love them, but there are days when they just don`t stop . . . like little Energizer bunnies! Here`s a tip . . . if your husband is home, suggest he take them out for ice cream or to the park and kill two birds with one stone.

You can also do your best to keep them busy. There are plenty of ideas on this blog and others.

Having a separate area to work can really help. Just shutting the door will minimize many distractions, but if worst comes to worst, you might want to consider hiring a mothers help or nanny to keep the kids busy while you get something done.

How do you deal with YOUR major distractions?
