Finding Work vs. Starting a Home Business

I’ve had some fairly steady writing clients for the past year or so and recently a couple of them moved on. I hit the internet, figuring I’d look at the job boards to find some new opportunities. Just like I always do.

This time it was different though. The sheer amount of junk out there is INSANE! I haven’t really looked much at the job boards lately, but I’m finding so many useless listings. There are always spam listings, but these days it’s overwhelming. Which brings me to the thought, should you look for work online or should you start a business and get your clients to come to you?

Personally, I favor the home business option. While I was looking for writing jobs (and eventually found them, after sifting through a lot of junk), I have seen an increase in bad job listings everywhere.

A home business doesn’t have to be the same as a job search. Yes, you might need to go to your clients sometimes, but they probably aren’t advertising on Craigslist then. Make yourself visible and people needing your services will come to your business. It takes time and you’ll need to get out there and network a lot, but it really is worth it. When someone comes to you and hires you, it’s not because they are looking for someone to fill out their affiliate quota, it’s because they want your skill set.

What do you think? Should you just look for a job online or start your own home business?

  1. I definately think that starting your own home business online is the best way……..

  2. I was laid off back in October… I started my home based Scentsy Candles and it has been the best thing! I absolutely love working from home and am able to spend the summer with my daughter!
