Finally, a Techie Book for Women

I am not a tech geek, nor do I want to be. But you have to admit that sometimes it comes in handy to have a little knowledge of electronics and computers. This is especially true when you find yourself trying to figure out how to set up a wireless network or something equally “difficult”. For the most part, I leave this stuff to my husband, but after our last computer buying disaster, I`m going to be taking things into my own hands. So, I was thrilled to receive a copy of Christina Tynan-Wood`s new book, How to Be A Geek Goddess.

I have to admit, the first flip through didn`t impress me much . . . I mean it seemed like pretty basic stuff that even I would know. But then I sat down and started to read and let me tell you, this is not your husband`s Tech for Dummies book.

Geek Goddess starts out with a note from Christina`s husband, directed to any men that might stumble across the book. And, like any good husband, he suggests that many copies be purchased, for any females in the man`s life. I thought that was a fun way to start the book, particularly since he is rather funny.

Christina is funny, too! And we all know how much easier information is to digest when it`s delivered with a touch of humor. Here`s a little excerpt from the introduction:

Every woman can be a geek goddess. Becoming one does not in any way resemble becoming a pompous ass or behaving like a man. It doesn`t require learning absurd acronyms or caring about things that don`t interest you. It is simply a matter of embracing the incredible innovation that`s going on in our times and harnessing it for our own purposes. Men have their way of relating to technology, and we have ours. I propose we live and let live.

As for the basic part, yes, there are some very basic sections, but they are so entertaining and well-written that you`ll read them anyway, even if you already know the stuff. That being said, I learned things throughout the entire book, even in sections I figured would just be repeating things I already knew . . . there are little gems strewn throughout the text that make it a book definitely worth reading.

Geek Goddess covers everything from how to buy a computer (very useful information in a world where men do a lot of the computer buying) to how to set up your own wireless network, shop online, and even how to use internet messaging, webcams, and other online communications tools. There`s a section on making sure your kids are safe online as well as your own and even an area for not-exactly-computer items, like cameras, memory cards, mp3 players and iPhones. Basically, it`s a wealth of information on all things technical and done in such a way that if you`ve ever been frustrated with techie stuff . . . now you`ll get it.

Want to read more? Get Christina`s book, How to Be a Geek Goddess and see how informative it is for yourself. Be forwarned, it`s HEAVY, so you`ll be reading this one at home . . . it`s not a good book for carrying along on doctor`s appointments!
