Donations, Are They Good for YOU?

Growing up, it was expected of my sisters and I that we would donate 10% of all our income to charity of some sort. My parents weren´t big on church going, but they encouraged us to seek out a worthy cause and put part of our money toward it.

To this day, I think that giving part of your earnings to benefit someone else is a good idea. Whether you are religious or not, giving something away (it could even be time or product, not necessarily cash) promotes an abundance mentality, as opposed to a scarcity one. The feeling that you have more than enough, so you can share, tends to result in people that are far happier than those who hang onto every cent, begrudging even the dollar that their spouse hands to a homeless person on the street.

I have to admit, sometimes I find myself poised to send a small donation to a favorite charity and the fear that there just isn´t enough clutches at me. But there always is in the end.

Why You Should Consider Donating

The benefits of donating to a worthy cause are many and they aren´t just about the person you`re helping!

  • Setting a good example for your kids, teaching them not to be selfish
  • Opening your mind to the fact that you are actually far better off than many others
  • Feeling good . . . it’s ok to feel great about helping someone else out!
  • Getting rid of the idea that there is never enough to go around, it’s a liberating feeling
  • Learning about other cultures, sometimes in your own backyard
  • Really, really appreciating the value of a dollar (amazing how much rice that buck can buy a family in Africa!)
  • Tax deductions

You can find plenty of worthy organizations if you just look. I personally favor Kiva and Mayan Families, what are your favorites?
