Dealing with Overwhelming Tasks
My mother is great at motivation. When I was little, we often walked long distances. When we would get tired (as small children are wont to do!), she would urge us on by saying, “Let´s just walk to that rock there”, pointing to a rock a few feet away. That was quite manageable, so we´d walk to the rock. Then she would point to something else a few more feet along, “We can make it to that little tree.” And so on and so forth, until suddenly, we had arrived, without even noticing!
The best way that I have found to deal with huge projects and tasks is to follow my mom´s advice. Stop staring the thing in the face and just break it down into manageable steps. You hear this advice all the time, but how do you actually put it into practice? Here´s how.
1. What is your goal? Write it down. Example: for this blog, I want to have 500 unique visitors per day by Jan. 1st.
2. What is the first thing you have to do in order to start the task? Whether it is making a phone call, sending an email, writing an outline, or buying materials, write it down. Just that one thing. Example: Comment on other blogs, every day.
3. Now fill in the blanks. What do you need to do next to get closer to your goal? Example: Hold a contest, host a group writing project, take part in blog carnivals.
It does take a little planning, but once you get the hang of baby steps, you´ll find that you can reach your goals far easier than you ever imagined!
