Considerations in Choosing a Business Name

Choosing a name for your business is like selecting one for your child. It has to fit just right. In the case of a business, you also want to make sure that it hasnt been taken by anyone else. here are a few things to consider when looking for the perfect name.

- Use your own name with care. A personal name on a business can mark it as amateur or smalltime. While this isnt always true (think Betty Crocker), it is most of the time, so you might want to consider something else.

- If you plan to have an online presence (which every business should have, in my opinion), you might want to pick a name that is also an available domain name.

- Dont limit yourself. Valley Jams might sound nice now, but what if you want to expand into pickles later on down the road? Keep your options open.

- Dont be too vague. It helps if people can figure out what you do by hearing your business name. For example, Trusted Services leaves you wondering what the company does, but Trusted Protection Services is obvious, without being too specific. A company with this name could start out selling house alarms and later branch into corporate office security systems, body guards, etc.

- Avoid using a location in your name . . . unless it is immovable. A place name like Vancouver Computer Networking is going to have a tough time expanding to another town! But a guest ranch called Galiano Island Pastures would be appropriate because it wont be going anywhere.

- Go with something people will remember. A name that is difficult to spell or pronounce wont help your business much.
