Choose the Right Desk
Is your old work desk getting a bit wobbly? Or maybe you don‘t even have a real desk, just work off the kitchen table! I personally use a battered metal table that just happens to fit into the corner of my bedroom and is the perfect size to hold my computer, plus a myriad of junk that my toddler keeps bringing me. But I‘m on the lookout for a new desk. In my hunt, here is what I have learned is important in a desk.
1. It should be the right height. Believe it or not, not all desks are the same height. Try the desk out before you buy. You should be able to work or type easily without straining your wrists or having to bend them at odd angles.
2. Look for one with drawers. Just a plain desk with legs gets cluttered very quickly, as I have learned. Drawers are perfect for organizing everything . . . or sweeping the mess on top of your desk into, if you happen to be the unorganized type!
3. Get a desk that has at least one locking drawer. This is where you can keep anything you don‘t want the kids to have, like that last box of paperclips, a pair of scissors, the only surviving pen in the house, etc. Just make sure you hide the key where you can find it and they can‘t.
4. Consider one with cubbies on top of the desk if you have a lot of paperwork and stuff floating around. This can help you keep everything nice and neat and out of reach of sticky little fingers.
5. If you are going to be using this desk for your computer, get one that has a keyboard tray. This is a big help because it reduces wrist strain. The average desk meant for reading and writing is not usually optimized for proper hand-on-keyboard positioning.
6. Avoid those elegant wooden desks, they stain! Go for something with a nice, washable surface, like a laminate. This means you‘ll be able to get rid of wayward crayon marks and coffee spills without freaking out.
7. If you have toddlers or a baby, you might want to look for a desk that has rounded corners. Those sharp edges are at just the right height for a little kid to whack his head on. I know because my 17 month old has a semi-permanent bruise on his forehead from my desk!
Keep these tips in mind when you are out buying your new desk. There‘s nothing like having a nice place to work and the desk is just the beginning!
