Can Housework and a Home Business Co-Exist?
There is a common misconception among regular working folks that if you work from home, you must have plenty of time to clean. I don’t know about you, but my house is far from being neat and clean. The fact of the matter is, it’s hard to get housework done when you have a business to run, kids to look after and a husband to spend time with.
For many work at home moms, the best way to deal with your housework is to simply decide on an acceptable level of mess for you. Some women are more demanding and won’t be comfortable in even a semi-messy house, while others are fine as long as they aren’t tripping over anything on the way to the kitchen. Whatever your mess threshold is, here are a few tips on how to clean more efficiently.
- Do a quick clean up each night. Get rid of obvious mess and you’ll feel better when you wake up. That might mean tossing all the toys in a bin, washing up the dishes, or gathering up all the dirty laundry strewn about and putting it into the laundry room.
- Have baskets at the top and bottom of the stairs. Anything that belongs downstairs but is upstairs gets tossed into the nearest basket and vice versa. Each evening, grab a basket and put everything away.
- Enlist your husband. Let him know you desperately need a hand and give him a choice between two or three tasks. It might help not to ask if he wants to help, but rather which chore he would prefer to do.
- Break things into manageable tasks. Instead of trying to clean the whole house in one day, go for just one room, or even a cupboard or closet.
- Hold 3 five minute cleanups throughout the day. Everyone drops what they are doing, even toddlers can help, and run through the house, picking up anything they find out of place for exactly five minutes. You won’t get everything done, but it will still be a lot neater than before!
- Buy an all purpose cleaner that you can use for windows, counters and floors. This saves you time digging out the correct product for each task and you can carry just one bottle with you from room to room.
- Have a list of daily chores, weekly chores and monthly chores. For example, you may have sweeping and wiping down the counter on the daily list, mopping or vacuuming on the weekly one, and dusting for cobwebs on the monthly list.
