Being Professional with Screaming Kids in the Background
As a work at home mom, you may have noticed that it can be a tad difficult to maintain your professionalism at times! Whether you are trying to make an important call with the baby screeching in his crib or turning in paperwork smeared with peanut butter fingerprints, it is obvious that your standards drop just a little when you have kids! Here are a few ideas on how to present that superwoman image to your clients . . . even if toys are spilling out of the closet behind you!
1. Keep paperwork in waterproof folders. You can buy some really funky plastic pocket folders that keep sticky fingers off your important paperwork. They are also handy as protection against grape juice spills and the like.
2. If you have to make a phone call, wait until the kids are down for a nap or busy coloring quietly. Go into another room with the phone and close the door (the bathroom is a good place!). Lock it if you have to.
3. Have one room in your house that looks professional, if you have clients coming over. Preferably one near the entrance so you don´t have to clean up much before someone appears. It can be a small room, all you need is a table or desk and some chairs. Some women find that it is easiest to kick their husband out of the garage and convert that into their workshop/office area. If you do this, make sure that you have a curtain or a room divider that can block the messy work area off.
4. Have a box of special toys and activities for when you really need a moment´s peace. Make sure the toys are quiet ones like bubbles or an Etch A Sketch . If you have an important meeting or phone call, break out the special toys.
5. Buy some boxes. Big plastic bins are very handy for hiding lots of junk, toys, dishes, anything that happens to be laying around. Perfect for emergency cleanups when your client calls and gives you five minutes notice of his arrival.
