Avoiding Work at Home Solitude
Working from home is good, you get to set your own hours, spend time with the kids . . . but what about social interaction? Many women find themselves desperate for a little grown-up company after spending all day, every day at home with small children. The solitude can really get to you after a while!
You don´t have to shutter yourself in and never speak to anyone else ever again, just because you´re a wahm, but it can also be difficult to justify going out for purely social reasons when you have heaps of work to do. It´s an important part of staying balanced, however. And staying balanced is important to getting lots of work done, so really, getting together with friends is vital to the health of your home business. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
- Find a mother´s group. Mother´s groups usually meet on a weekly basis and this is an ideal way to get out with your kids. They can play with other children their age and you can hang out with other moms.
- Get involved in an online group. Facebook is a good place to find like-minded moms and wahms. Here´s a great article on “everpink” social networking sites for moms. These are great places to connect with other mothers and you might even find some wahms there, too.
- Take people up on their invitations. How often have you received an invite to go to a birthday party, a Christmas party, etc. and turned it down because you “have too much to do”? That´s not the way to achieve balance. Go ahead and hit a party or two, whether with your child or on your own.
- Go for a walk. Hook up with a friend who lives relatively nearby and start going for a walk every day together. This is a great way to get a bit of exercise and your daily quota of non-kid talk. Multi-tasking like that will make you feel less guilty about not working.
What do you do to make sure you stay in contact with other human beings?
