Are Your Work Hours Making You Less Productive?

You know the saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy?” Well, it could be changed to say “All work and no play makes Jane an unproductive girl” and still be just as true, though not as catchy.

Do you find yourself spending hours and hours working only to reach the end of the day and realize you only got a fraction of what you wanted done? This past weekend, that happened to me and it got me to thinking.

See, I’d scheduled a full weekend because I had a lot of client work. I sat down and spent about 18 hours on Saturday at my desk, and another 12 on Sunday. I should have finished everything in that amount of time, right?

Wrong.

In fact, I finished so little, my entire weekend was basically wasted. That’s when I started to think about it and realized that I might as well have spent two or three hours a day working and the rest of the time with my family! While we tend to think that we’re being more productive by sitting at the desk for longer hours, that’s not necessarily true.

We all need some relaxation time and by taking a break and hanging out with your family or doing something you’ve been wanting to get done, you’ll actually end up getting more done . . . chances are if I’d worked less hours this weekend, I’d have gotten the same amount of actual work done, but also gotten some baking, laundry and time with my kids in there.

Has this happened to you?
