They were from out of town and we were getting ready for a trip, so there was laundry strewn everywhere in preparation. I was so embarrassed!! Our main floor at that time was on the second floor (where the washer and dryer were), so while my husband took their coats, and they made their trek upstairs, I ran into the powder room and quickly "shined" up the bathroom with glass cleaner I kept under the sink. There was no hope for the laundry, but at least my bathroom looked presentable. I never get the dishwasher emptied until the end of the day and it helps to be able to keep the counter clean and just throw the dishes in the sink until dinner time. :) Even if you have a dishwasher fill the sink with soapy water.
