5 Reasons You Should Not Work in Pajamas

Everyone always talks about how great it would be to work at home and stay in your pajamas all day. It would be nice, in fact, many wahms do it. But it isn´t the best way and here is why:

1. Getting dressed in the morning automatically puts you into a different frame of mind. You are ready to meet the day and wearing business clothing helps you prepare mentally for the fact that you need to work. If you are in pajamas, you will be more inclined to take it easy.

2. Unless you live in the middle of nowhere and only interact with the world through internet, you could have unexpected visitors. There is nothing more embarrassing than finding yourself in front of a potential client in your Snoopy jammies and bunny slippers!

3. As a mom, you need to set a good example for your kids and what better way to do that than to get up and get dressed? Wearing pjs all day could potentially result in a power struggle over clothing later on!

4. People take you more seriously when you are dressed. Even if your husband and family is supportive of your working at home, they might figure that you are slacking off if you are in your sleepwear during the work day. Show them that you are serious about your business and get dressed.

5. You tend to put things off when you are wearing pajamas. Need to go to the store? Ahhhh, later, you´d have to get dressed to do that! If you are presentable early on, you won´t hesitate to go out in public and will end up getting more done.

Do you have your own reason for not working in pajamas? Or perhaps a reason that you SHOULD wear pjs while working at home? Share with us!

  1. Finally! I thought I was the only one who felt this way. I definitely have a better mindset for work if I dress before I start. (That’s not to say that I dress as formally as I would for an office.) I think people have an image of WAHMs sitting around in their PJs all day, and it doesn’t make us seem quite as professional.

  2. I get super lazy when I stay in my pjs. It just helps get the day off to the right start if you put some real clothes on! But I agree that you don´t need to be as formal as you would with an office job, jeans are fine. :D

  3. I do agree with #5. I put it off untill later which sometimes turns into “I’ll just do it tomorrow”

  4. [...] If you are putting around in pajama bottoms and a T-shirt all day you can’t expect to feel like you’re on your A-game. Slowly but surely your choice of bed attire during the day will have a negative impact on your self esteem without you even realizing it. You should not work in your pajamas. [...]

  5. I totally agree with every one of your points…and yet, I never get dressed in anything more than the equivalent of sweatpants. :) It’s worth all the humiliation and more to be oh so comfy all day long :)

    Maybe I’ll start getting dressed….next week ;)

  6. I saw a topic the other day saying you should not blog naked, I agreed, and indeed am fully dressed.
I think you are right about the whole mindset thing, but am happy in jeans or whatever, just not PJ’s

  7. Never mind 5 good reasons, I can think of one big reason, I run a Cafe Bar. I never work in pajames, ever.

  8. Slowly but surely your choice of bed attire during the day will have a negative impact on your self esteem without you even realizing it.

  9. I agree that working in PJ’s vs. wearing regular clothes has its advantages. Especially when you need to run a quick errand or pick the kids up from school.

  10. I have to admit that it does feel better to be dressed while working at home. But, I can also say that wearing jammies is fun when you don’t expect anyone to come to the door!

  11. I love to work in my pajamas, but I am fortunate to have the type of business that I can do that with. I’m an internet marketer and hardly ever get any visitors during the day nor do I need to go out and visit customers or business associates. Everything I do is through the internet via my computer.

  12. Of course, when you don’t expect anyone is when someone shows up!
