15 Ways to Be More Active While Working From Home

One of the big issues that work at home moms face is getting enough exercise. It can be a challenge to work in some walking or sit-ups while you´re trying to meet deadlines, but it is definitely an area that should be a part of your day. So, how do you add more activity into your busy day?

  1. Park a block away from the store. When you go out, just make yourself walk that extra block to the post office or store. It won´t take much time, but you´ll be getting a bit of an activity boost.
  2. Get a pedometer. This will let you see exactly how much you are walking in a day. It´s a real eye opening experience!
  3. Crawl around with the kids. Your younger children will love it if you take ten out of your day to give them “horsey rides” or even just get down on all fours and pretend to be a puppy or cat.
  4. Use a stationary bike with your laptop. There are apparently even treadmills set up for computer work . . . you won´t burn tons of calories, but it would definitely get you moving!
  5. Use a standing desk. When you are standing up to work, you´ll increase the amount that you walk per day by up to 50%!
  6. Run up the stairs. If you live in a house with stairs, chances are you use them several times a day. Start running them instead of trudging up and down and you´ll raise your heart rate a little.
  7. Set a timer. Every time your egg timer goes off (15-30 min. apart), get up and do ten squats, five pushups, or any other exercise you want. This has the advantage of getting you out of that computer chair, too.
  8. Make an evening walk a habit. Take the dog out or walk with your kids around the block after dinner. It´s a nice habit to get into and can be a nice way to bond with your family.
  9. Keep important papers at the other end of the room or house. That way, you´ll be forced to walk there when you need to get something.
  10. Drink lots of water. Not only is this healthy, it will require you to get up and head to the bathroom more often.
  11. Go on family bike rides. This is a great way to teach your kids to get some exercise, too and it`s fun to see the neighborhood as you whiz past on your bike.
  12. Walk in place. Washing the dishes? Sorting mail? Try marching in place. It`s not going to make you thin by any means, but it can certainly get your blood pumping a bit and even wake you up.
  13. Do some stretches. It`s easy to get stiff and sore from sitting at the computer all day (trust me, I know!), so doing some stretches whenever you switch tasks can be a good way to ease the cricks and boost energy levels.
  14. Sit on an exercise ball. Whether you are knitting, working on jewelry or typing on your computer, an exercise ball can be just the thing to help build muscles . . . you`ll find that they are needed to keep your balance!.
  15. Punish yourself. Having a hard time staying away from your emails when you should be working? Drop and give me ten! By doing ten sit-ups, crunches or pushups every time you check your email, play a round of Wedding Dash or any other non-work related activity, you could end up with a LOT of extra exercise!
